James, the clinical pharmacist and co-owner of Nga Hua pharmacy has a strong interest in everything related to tackling Metabolic syndrome, spending most of his time outside of the pharmacy reading and researching this topic.
You may have heard of metabolic syndrome before, but it is essentially having three or more of the following conditions:
- Obesity (particularly central/abdominal obesity)
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- High blood sugar (hyperglycaemia/type 2 diabetes)
- High triglycerides (high amounts of a type of fatty acid in the blood)
- Low HDL (low amounts of the protective high-density lipoprotein)
The above list of conditions makes up to almost 70% of the prescription items we dispense at Nga Hua pharmacy.
But the current treatment paradigm for pretty much all the above conditions is pharmaceutical drugs. This is where we want to differ from other existing pharmacies.
At Nga Hua pharmacy, we believe in using healthy food as a therapeutic intervention to parts of the metabolic syndrome. Of course, there are times when pharmaceutical intervention is necessary, but what we want to do is start shifting the treatment paradigm from not ONLY relying on pharmaceutical drugs, but to one that is more natural and fitting for the human body. People cannot carry on relying purely on pharmaceutical drugs to help them get healthy. Nga Hua pharmacy wants you and your whanau to be on the least number of pharmaceutical drugs as safely possible, if none. Yes, you read that right. The very concept that a pharmacy is based on (dispensing pharmaceutical drugs), Nga Hua pharmacy doesn’t want to be.
Nga Hua pharmacy will be at the forefront in educating the people of Aotearoa to start realising the powerful potential of using healthy food choices as a treatment option in tackling metabolic syndrome. Because let’s be honest, the current drug focused treatment isn’t working. If it was working, we wouldn’t have the epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes that is plaguing Aotearoa.
